FEMALE MILITARY AT AFGHANISTAN
Flight Lieutenant Daphne and Lieutenant Anneke Kerklaan compare the tools of their respective trades in Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan.
Mid Caption - The two young women on the front line of the war against the Taliban have found a remarkable connection - one is an Aussie flying attack helicopters for the Dutch; the other was brought up in Holland, and now leads Sappers in the Australian Army.
Flight Lieutenant Daphne was brought up in Sydney but moved to The Netherlands when she was 10. Lieutenant Anneke Kerklaan was brought up in Holland and joined the ADF after her family moved to Sydney.
Their remarkable, near-parallel lives, finally intersected in the dusty, sun-baked forward operations base of Camp Holland in Tarin Kowt Afghanistan in the summer of 2008, as both women play their part at the sharp end of the coalition campaign.
